Servings: Makes one 6-inch round cake (8 portions)
Ingredients
Cake
  • 1/2 tsp. butter , for greasing
  • 8 ounces Rich tea biscuits
  • 4 ounces unsalted butter , softened
  • 4 ounces granulated sugar
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate , for the cake
  • 1 egg
Coating and Decorating
  • 8 ounces dark chocolate , for coating
  • 1 ounce chocolate , for decorating
Directions
To make cake: Lightly grease a 6" x 2 1/2" cake ring and place on a tray on a sheet of parchment paper.

Break each of the biscuits into almond-size pieces by hand and set aside.

Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until the mixture starts to lighten.

Melt the 4 ounces of dark chocolate and add to the butter mixture while constantly stirring.

Beat the egg into the mixture.

Fold in the biscuit pieces until they are all coated with the chocolate mixture.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake ring. Try to fill all of the gaps on the bottom of the ring because this will be the top when it is unmolded.

Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours.

To coat and decorate: Remove the cake from the refrigerator and let it stand while you melt the 8 ounces of dark chocolate.

Slide the ring off the cake and turn it upside down onto a cake wire.

Pour the melted chocolate over the cake and smooth the top and sides using a palette knife.

Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature.

Carefully run a knife around the bottom of the cake where the chocolate has stuck to the cake wire and lift it onto a tea plate.

Melt the remaining 1 ounce of chocolate and use to decorate the top of the cake.

OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST

PRESENTS DOUBLE-HEADER WEEKEND
SET FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 (OZZFEST)
AND SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 (KNOTFEST)
AT SAN MANUEL AMPHITHEATER AND FESTIVAL GROUNDS
IN SAN BERNARDINO, CA

By Karen Ostlund at thepress conference last Thursday, May 12th at the Palladium in Hollywood, CA.
On hand at the press conference were OZZFEST founder Ozzy Osbourne and Slipknot's Corey Taylor and M. Shawn Crahan (aka Clown).
The event began with a movie screening, followed by a Q&A session with artists from the OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST  and concluded with a
performance from Zakk Sabbath, led by Zakk Wylde.

The two of the most well-known and established brands in rock, OZZFEST, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and KNOTFEST, which debuted in 2012 is set for Saturday, September 24 (OZZFEST) and Sunday, September 25 (KNOTFEST) at San Manuel Amphitheaterand Festival Grounds in San Bernardino, CA.
Tickets for the Live Nation-produced OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST, a multi-stage, two-day weekend camping event with more than 40 acts will go on sale Friday, May 20 at 10:00 AM (PT) at www.OZZFEST.COM and www.KNOTFEST.COM

Saturday's OZZFEST will be headlined by Black Sabbath which will mark their last Southern California performance as part of the band's final tour, and Sunday's KNOTFEST bill is topped by the festival's namesake, Slipknot.
"We are here to create havoc and history," said Ozzy Osbourne. "Let the madness begin..."
"We want it to be the loudest, biggest, dirtiest festival in California. We couldn't be happier," said Sharon Osbourne.
"This could be the one of the coolest things I've ever been a part of," said Corey Taylor of Slipknot.  "Starting out as an Ozzfest band, coming into our own with Knotfest and now combining forces to make a little metal history,it was meant to be and I'm proud to be a part of it."
"Playing with Black Sabbath is always an honor,"Shawn "Clown" Crahan of Slipknot explained.  "Merging both festivals will be a legendary experience that will be life-changing for all fans.  We are excited to bring all the families together again."

"The impact of Ozzfest on heavy music and on Slipknot, cannot be underestimated," said Cory Brennan, President, 5B Artist Management.  "For 20 years Ozzfest has given fans their first glimpse at bands like Slipknot, Disturbed and countless others, but also bringing new fans and bands together every year.  Ozzfest inspired Slipknot to continue this vital tradition with Knotfest, and it's an honor to celebrate our genre alongside them in 2016."
The San Manuel Amphitheater and Festival Grounds is where OZZFEST, the event that launched the U.S. hard rock festival market and went on to tour the world. It began in 1996 and where KNOTFEST last year took over the San Bernardino, CA venue and expanded into a camping festival.
There's also a longtime history between the two namesakes of the events, with Slipknot appearing at OZZFEST in 1999,2001, 2004, 2005 and 2013 at the inaugural OZZFEST Japan.

"So You Think You Can Dance" judge, dancer and singer Jason Derulo met his wax double May 19th 2016 at Madame Tussaud’s Hollywood, and struck a pose side-by-side with the figure. Following the dramatic unveiling, Derulo gave a special performance for his fans on the rooftop of the attraction.

“This place is a staple in Hollywood. When you’re walking or driving down Hollywood Boulevard, this is one of the places you have to come. It’s literally a legendary place, so to be a part of that family is such a blessing,” said Derulo.

Derulo personally selected the unique pose for his wax figure capturing one of his signature dance moves, unlike any Madame Tusssauds has created in its 200+ year history.
Derulo’s wax figure, which is styled with black Golden Denim jeans that he personally donated and red Nike Air Force One sneakers, is valued at more than $350,000.

Jason Derulo performed at the roof of Madame Tussaud, last Thursday May 19th.
Prior to the unveiling, Madame Tussaud's Hollywood released the first look of its expert team of sculptors and artists capturing Derulo’s measurements and likeness, as well as selecting the perfect matching hair and eye color for his figure. The session lasted more than two hours and over 250 measurements were taken.

“Jason’s figure is our most dynamic yet! It made for a very interesting sitting, which took almost three hours. We had to ask Jason to recreate one of his signature dance moves numerous times to ensure a perfect recreation,” said Colin Thomas, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hollywood. “It’s a great addition to our A-List party room – and a fun selfie opportunity!”

In the last six years since ascending to stardom, Derulo has sold over 55 million singles worldwide, all of which have been co-written by the artist himself.  Jason Derulo, who got his start writing hits for other a-list artists such as Lil Wayne, Pitbull, Diddy and more, has seen his eye-grabbing music videos amass over 3 billion views on YouTube.
His music has been streamed over six billion times on Spotify, and his singles have aired on radio to an audience of over 17 billion since his debut single "Whatcha Say."
His four acclaimed studio albums have accumulated eleven Top 10 singles (including four #1 singles on the Hot 100):  "Whatcha Say,""In My Head,""Ridin' Solo,""Don't Wanna Go Home,""It Girl,""The Other Side,""Marry Me,""Talk Dirty,""Wiggle,""Trumpets," and "Want To Want Me."  Equally as influential overseas, Jason Derulo has had four #1 singles in the UK, with "Want To Want Me" staying at #1 for four weeks in 2015.  Jason Derulo continues to remain at the forefront of modern music, of both urban and pop music.

Madame Tussauds Hollywood is Los Angeles' premiere Hollywood destination offering guests the world's only opportunity to interact with incredibly lifelike iconic figures from the celebrity worlds of film, TV, music, sports and politics. Only at Madame Tussauds can guests "grab hold" of their favorite stars and enjoy countless interactive experiences. Lifelike figures of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Johnny Depp and Will Smith are among the more than 125 featured figures.

(Center) Parade Grand Marshal 2016, Jewel Thais-Williams
Christopher Street West celebrates the 46th Anniversary of LA PRIDE with the announcement of its most iconic and honored role within the weekend festivities, the Parade Grand Marshal, Jewel Thais-Williams. The annual Parade, which takes place in West Hollywood, honors the LGBTQ community's past struggles while celebrating its future generation of leaders. The 2016 Parade celebration will also feature Los Angeles area LGBTQ pioneers from the community who have helped shape LGBTQ history, highlight community organizations, corporate partners and a mix of celebrities who support the LGBTQ community.

As the owner of the historic Catch One Disco, one of the most iconic Black gay discos in the world, Jewel Thais-Williams helped create a safe haven for many of the LGBTQ community for over 40 years. Not only was The Catch a place where one could find some of the biggest names in entertainment, like Sammy Davis Jr., Chaka Khan, Sylvester, Weather Girls, and Rick James, it also served as a community center for the Black LGBTQ community in Los Angeles.
Her work with those affected by HIV/AIDS has steadily continued through the years. In the realm of community service, she also co-founded the Minority AIDS Project, which aims to help those affected by the disease in the African-American and Hispanic communities. Jewel served as a Board member of the AIDS Project Los Angeles and has made significant strides in helping women affected by AIDS by co-founding Rue's House. Rue's House was the first housing facility for women with AIDS giving much-needed services and shelter for women and their children in the United States.

"I am humbled by my selection as the Grand Marshal for this years LA PRIDE Parade. Many years ago we collaborated with another club and a florist company to become the first representing people of color in the parade. What an honor it is for me to lead the parade, pause for a minute to acknowledge the unity we have come to cherish in the community," said Jewel Thais-Williams.

Jewel founded the Village Health Foundation in 2001. As a non-profit organization that specializes in nutrition, lifestyle changes, and diseases with high incidence in the African American community, the foundation aims to provide preventative health care and education to the community for diseases like HIV/AIDS, along with others. By offering services like emotional counseling, individual, family and group counseling, and medication therapy and management, Village Health Foundation does much to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the African-American LGBTQ community.

"Jewel Thais-Williams is a true symbol of leadership within our community. Her tireless efforts have positively affected the lives of countless LGBTQ minorities," said Marquita Thomas, CSW Board Member. "Jewel's dedication to bettering our community is truly inspiring to myself as well as a whole new generation of activists, community leaders and community supporters. In the past, our Grand Marshal has been a celebrity-focused opportunity. While we will again have celebrity participation throughout our parade, starting last year with Reverend Troy Perry and Trans youth activist Zoey, our Grand Marshal title now honors community activists who we consider to be our own celebrities and who have fearlessly fought for equality for our community."

In conjunction with LA PRIDE's recognition of Jewel Thais-Williams and her history of work, this year's weekend programming will engage guests through various events and activations to shed light on the HIV/AIDS crisis within LGBTQ communities of color.
While overall rates of HIV have declined in the United States, rates are increasing in African-American and Hispanic men who have sex with men.
At current rates, half of black and one quarter of Latino gay or bisexual men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetimes.
Focused on education, care, and prevention amongst LGBTQ community members of color, LA PRIDE, along with several LGBTQ Minority Community Based Organizations, will host onsite festival activations throughout the weekend.
LA PRIDE will also offer free entry into its Friday evening Vogue Ball for anyone who is tested for HIV at REACH LA before the event weekend. With all eyes on the signature parade on Sunday, June 12th, LA PRIDE will dedicate its 'Moment of Silence' to LGBTQ minorities affected by HIV/AIDS. Several parade contingents will march in solidarity to bring broader awareness to this epidemic that is plaguing LGBTQ communities of color.

Go For Broke National Education Center presented a new museum
and a  Pearl Harbor Exhibit "Defining Courage" Memorial Day Weekend
(Los Angeles, CA)   Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC) made debut of a new museum and groundbreaking "Defining Courage" exhibition with a homecoming festival Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 355 East First street downtown Little Tokyo.

Exhibit "Defining Courage" is free admission every Thursday from 5-8 pm
Every third Thursday of the month is free admission ALL DAY

May 28 2016, Ribbon cutting of new facilities and Defining Courage exhibit
opening about Pearl Harbor in Hawaii

The exhibition documents the Japanese American World War II experience beginning with Pearl Harbor and draws parallels to our contemporary times.
The exhibit explains with graphic photos and film clips the difference of being a Japanese who wanted peace living in USA, Dec.1 1941, and one week after (Dec.7) when the bomb hit Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
Sho Chiku Bai Sake tasting at the opening for everybody over 21

December 7 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor lagoon harbor on the island Oahu in Hawaii (USA)
U.S. were shocked.

December 8, 1941, the United States Congress declared war (Public Law 77-328, 55 STAT 795) on the Empire of Japan in response to that country's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor the prior day.

It was formulated an hour after the Infamy Speech of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Following the declaration, Japan's allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States, bringing the United States fully into World War II.

Americans of Japanese descent suddenly found themselves labeled “Enemy Alien.”
Over 110,000 Japanese Americans were sent to  WRA camps (War Relocation Authority camps) and wearing label tags.

From behind the barbed wire, young men volunteered for military service by the thousands.
The U.S. Army put them in their own segregated units–the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. These became the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.  In the Pacific, other Japanese American (JA) soldiers fought in the Military Intelligence Service. “Unknown Warriors of World War II” shines light on the brave, patriotic legacy of the JA soldiers of World War II.

The Defining Courage exhibition is divided into eight sections to illustrate the difficult decisions Japanese Americans were forced to make.
1. Pearl Harbor Aftermath:
The lives of Japanese Americans changed dramatically during the months immediately following their country (Japan) bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

2. Lives Left Behind:
“All of a sudden our friends were not our friends…we weren’t Americans anymore, we were Japs.  Nobody ever used that word before, but we in Hawaii were now considered Japs.  One year we were neighbors, and the next year we were enemies.”–Stanley M. Akita, Hanamuana, HI
Film clips from 1941
Japanese American families on the mainland were forced to relocated to WRA camps in accordance with Executive Order 9066. This meant that Japanese Americans had to sell their businesses, and their possessions–often for pennies on the dollar– unless they could find someone who was willing to store them.   Heirlooms, family pets, photographs and friends were almost immediately lost.  Community leaders were taken by the FBI.  Families with relatives in Japan and America were torn apart.  Almost overnight, these Americans lost everything, including their identity as Americans.

Japanese in USA had to wear paper hang-tags
after the Pearl Harbor attack
 3.History Revisited:
In History Revisited, we examine how we can stay safe as a country while simultaneously honoring the Bill of Rights.  The current global climate is bringing the Japanese American experiences of WWII to the fore, again.  Some parallels include the treatment of Arab and Muslim Americans after the events of 9/11; the USA Patriot Act of 2001; nativist rhetoric against immigrants; and the rise of racial profiling.
4.Piece it Together:
What was it like to be an American one day, and a person of suspicion the next?  Piece it Together is an interactive storytelling component that provides a window into the experiences and emotions of Japanese Americans during WWII.  Visitors begin the journey geographically, selecting a destination.  They are then placed in the shoes of young Japanese Americans during the war.  They are confronted with decisions like “Will you join the military while your family is incarcerated?”; “Will you protest against the government’s unjust treatment?”; “Will you leave your family behind in the incarceration camp to seek education on the East Coast?”  In this computer-based activity, they then make a decision and face the consequences, learning about real-life Japanese Americans who made similar choices during World War II.

5.Propaganda Deconstructed:
The exhibition warns against propaganda, fear mongering, and the abridgement of constitutional rights.  To illustrate the power of the media and others, Propaganda Deconstructed teaches visitors the methods by which propaganda is spread.  Visitors learn how stories, images, and videos are often edited to change the meaning.  On a large touch-screen, visitors experiment with cropping modern images in order to express differing messages.
6.Media Maker:
Media Maker lets visitors create their own mini-documentary films about the Japanese American World War II experience and its relevance to today.  This computer-based activity provides visitors an opportunity to create a short film using drag and drop technology.  Visitors draw from a library of hundreds of oral history clips, historic photographs and films, documents, and the personal stories of hundreds of wartime Japanese Americans. After the video has been created, visitors will be able to email themselves a link to their documentary to share with their friends and family.
Hang tags,  Japanese were marked with during
World War II

7. Woven Thoughts:
The political and social climate during World War II is quite relevant today.  Woven Thoughts provides visitors with an opportunity to weigh in on contemporary issues. Participants will cast their vote in response to a question by selecting a piece of fabric and weaving it into a wire grid. These different colored ribbons will form a mosaic that provides a visual representation of public sentiment.
8. Courage:
The Nisei soldiers, members of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), served heroically in Europe and the Pacific. The 100th/442nd remains the most highly decorated unit in US military history for its size and length of service, and the MIS was credited with shortening the war by two years.

Defining Courage exhibit closes with a selection of quotes from the Japanese American soldiers ‘passing the torch’ on to the next generation.  These quotes are taken from GFBNEC’s Hanashi oral history collection.
The Japanese American veteran experience is a story of resilience, courage and a firm belief in the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
The new Museum is located in the former  Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple which was once among the largest and most influential Buddhist Temples in the United States.  At the time, Little Tokyo was home to more than 30,000 Japanese Americans.
GFBNEC is located at 355 E. First St., Suite 200 in Los Angeles, CA 90012.

When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to
investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen.
The book "Attack on Pearl Harbor" claims that his sub hit four coral reefs and sank.

into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American

American Hawaiian soldier, David Akui
(died in 1987)
Sakamaki was one of ten sailors (five officers and five petty officers) selected to attack Pearl Harbor in two-man Ko-hyoteki class midget submarines on 7 December 1941.
Of the ten, nine were killed (including the other crewman in his submarine, Kiyoshi Inagaki).
After being taken to Sand Island in Hawaii, Sakamaki requested that he wanted to commit suicide, which was denied. Sakamaki spent the rest of the war until September 1945 in prisoner-of-war camps on the mainland United States.
At the war's end, he was repatriated to Japan, by time he had become deeply committed to pacifism (opposition to war, militarism, or violence).

Sakamaki prisoner of war 1941-45,
before he died 1999 in Japan
Outside of writing a memoir, Sakamaki refused to speak about the war until 1991.
He spent the rest of his life in Japan until his death in 1999 at the age of 81, and was survived by his wife and two children.
Sakamaki wrote a memoir titled "Four Years as a Prisoner-of-War, No. 1" and his memoirs were translated and published in the United States on the eighth anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack under the title  "I Attacked Pearl Harbor".
Sakamaki's experience as a prisoner of war in America was detailed in "The Anguish of Surrender: Japanese POWs of World War II" by Ulrich Straus (2004).
The attack on Pearl Harbor took place before a declaration of war by Japan, but that was not the intent of the Japanese leadership.
It was originally stipulated that the attack should not commence until 30 minutes after Japan had informed the United States that it was withdrawing from further peace negotiations. It was the intent of the Japanese to uphold the conventions of war while still achieving surprise, but the attack began before the notice could be delivered.
Tokyo transmitted the 5,000-word notification (known as the "14-Part Message") in
two blocks to the Japanese Embassy in Washington - but the transcription took too long
for the ambassador to deliver it in time. Many lives could have been saved.
Nuclear weapons have been used twice in nuclear warfare history, both times by the
United States against Japan near the end of World War II.
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. Army Air Forces detonated a uranium gun-type smaller
fission bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
Three days later, on August 9, the U.S. Army Air Forces detonated a plutonium
implosion-type fission  bigger bomb codenamed "Fat Man" over the Japanese
city of Nagasaki, which made Japan surrender, August 15 1945.
World War II ended two weeks after,  September 2nd 1945.
The bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 civilians and
military personnel from acute injuries sustained from the explosions.
The ethics of the bombings and their role in Japan's surrender remain the
subject of scholarly and popular debate.
After the Pearl Harbor bombing Japanese Americans
were relocated to WRA, War Relocation Authority camps in US (1942-45)
After the Pearl Harbor bombing, which lasted 90 min,  and declaration of War (the day after) December 8 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the War Relocation Authority (WRA), which selected ten sites to incarcerate more than 110,000 Japanese Americans (64% were American citizens). They had been forcibly removed from the West Coast, where over 80% of Japanese Americans lived.

All camps closed closed between October 15 and December 15 1945. Tule Lake was the last camp which held "renunciants" slated for deportation to Japan. It closed on March 20, 1946, and Executive Order 9742, signed by President Harry S. Truman on June 26, 1946, and officially ended the WRA’s camps mission in USA.
About Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC)
Since its formation in 1989, Go For Broke National Education Center has been committed to educating the public about the responsibilities, challenges, and rights of American citizenship by using the life stories of the Japanese American soldiers of World War II. In order to share these stories, they began video recording the oral histories of Japanese American veterans, and today they have the largest collection of its kind in the country. The interviews have been incorporated into a complete curriculum with lesson plans and web-based project learning to share their story with youth across the country.
In 1999, GFBNEC dedicated the Go For Broke Monument in the Little Tokyo District of Los Angeles. On the monument are the insignias of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service (MIS), 522nd Field Artillery Battalion, 232nd Combat Engineer Company, and the 1399 Engineer Construction Battalion.

LOS ANGELES, June 8, 2016—The Broad’s first special exhibition, Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life, opens this Saturday June 11, 2016 and will feature more than 120 works by the groundbreaking artist, including works never before seen in Los Angeles and large-scale site-specific wall murals.

The first major museum show of Sherman’s work in Los Angeles since 1997, the comprehensive survey is drawn primarily from the Broad collection, which has the world’s largest holdings of the artist’s work, with select loans from the artist and museums around the country. Organized by guest curator Philipp Kaiser and presented in the home city of the filmmaking industry, the exhibition showcases Sherman’s engagement with 20th century popular film and celebrity, drawing on cinema’s role in the shaping of identity and stereotypes.

The exhibition, which runs through Oct. 2, fills the museum’s first-floor galleries with an expansive representation of Sherman’s photographs from her four-decade career, spanning from 1975 to works completed this year. Playing a central conceptual role in the show are Sherman’s widely known Untitled Film Stills, in which the artist poses as her own model in a variety of nostalgic yet rigorously conceived scenes reminiscent of B-movies of the 1950s and 60s.

The exhibition highlights other major photographic series by the artist, including the centerfolds (1981), the fairy tales (1985), the history portraits (1989–90), the sex pictures (1992) and her clown pictures (2003–04).
Also included is Office Killer, the 1997 comedy-horror feature film directed by the artist. Bookending the exhibition are major examples of Sherman’s connection to film.

The exhibition opens with two massive full-wall murals—newly conceived by the artist for this exhibition—that reimagine Sherman’s 1980 rear-screen projection photographs, which were inspired by techniques and archetypes in midcentury cinema. The show closes with new photographs produced this year and never before seen in Los Angeles that focus on 1920s film publicity photos of aging starlets.
Entrance of Cindy Sherman exhibit at The Broad Museum

“Dedicating The Broad’s first special exhibition to the work of Cindy Sherman points to the significance of her shape-changing, convention-disrupting work to visual culture generally, but also, on a more personal level, to the history of Sherman’s work in the Broad collection, a remarkable and defining commitment that stretches back almost 35 years,” said Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad. “Since first encountering her work in the early 1980s, Eli and Edye Broad have amassed a holding unparalleled worldwide.”

Sherman’s pioneering work combines photography and performance art. The artist is featured in nearly every work, depicting a range of media-influenced female stereotypes and personas, environments and guises. Shooting alone in her studio, Sherman serves as makeup-up artist, hairstylist, model, director and photographer. Her decades-long performative practice has produced many of contemporary art’s most iconic and influential images. Through her works, Sherman raises powerful questions about identity, representation and the role of images in contemporary culture.

From screen siren and pin-up to socialite and businesswoman, the roles Sherman depicts through her monumental body of work provocatively engage with contemporary life’s mediated personas and stereotypes, drawing not only from art history but also from the histories of advertising, cinema and media.

Guest curator Philipp Kaiser has assembled a comprehensive survey of Sherman’s entire career, drawing works primarily from the Broad collection with key contributions from Metro Pictures; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Menil Collection; and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Cindy Sherman art 1993

Kaiser is an independent curator, writer and teacher who previously served as the director of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne and has held curatorial positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Museum for Contemporary Art, Basel. He has organized large-scale exhibitions on art of the 1980s, Land Art, California Conceptualism and many individual presentations of artists’ work including Jack Goldstein, Bruce Nauman and Louise Lawler, among others.

“For over 40 years, Cindy Sherman’s work has moved within the discussion of identity and representation and, in doing so, has maneuvered through various mass-media contexts, among others cinema; its fictional suggestions and typologies have long since become a real ersatz-reality, an imitation of life,” said Kaiser. “Sherman’s early Untitled Film Stills as well as her rear projections refer explicitly to the cinema: stills, drawing from the existing format of the stationary image, which serves to publicize a film through its obtrusive, seductive allure as visual bait, as well as the rear projection, which was explicitly appropriated from the context of cinema.”

“Moreover, this explicitness, the direct proximity to the cinematic image, entails, beyond the deconstructive impulse of postmodernist photography, that the works contain a suggestive narrative potential,” Kaiser said. “In this way, the imitation of cinema and the imitation of life blur beyond recognition. Sherman’s decision to title her exhibition Imitation of Life moves toward enabling a distinct and specific perspective on her work, first in the title’s referring to Douglas Sirk’s well-known melodrama about a young girl’s identity crisis, and second because the concept of imitation seems essential to Sherman’s artistic practice.”

A new extensive illustrated catalogue accompanies Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life and includes an essay from the exhibition’s guest curator Philipp Kaiser, an introduction by founding director of The Broad Joanne Heyler and a conversation between Cindy Sherman and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola. While offering art historical insights into Sherman’s iconic photographs, the catalogue also positions Sherman in the history of film. Co-curated by independent curator and writer Bradford Nordeen and director of editorial operations at Pitchfork Brandon Stosuy, the Nonobject(ive): Summer Happenings at The Broad series will be held one Saturday night a month through September and will occupy various spaces throughout the museum and public outdoor plaza. A constellation of musicians, performers and multimedia artists will take their thematic calling from the many guises of Cindy Sherman, as well as Pop art and works of the 1980s and 1990s that helped shape the underground, rave and downtown Manhattan cultures. The first program in the series, inspired by the Cindy Sherman special exhibition, will be held on June 25 and will feature Perfume Genius’s orchestrations and the ever-changing masked choreography of Narcissister. In the spirit of Sherman’s photographs, performance collective Mutant Salon will transform visitors’ hair, make-up and minds in a pop-up beauty parlor and hive for creative collaboration and self-care. Tickets to Nonobject(ive): Summer Happenings also include access to the full museum and the special exhibition.

Also curated by Bradford Nordeen, the Doll Parts film series will take place every other Thursday night throughout the summer in The Broad’s Oculus Hall. The film series is inspired by Cindy Sherman’s darker works and will examine the iconography of the artist’s photographic practice, showcasing influences, like minds and apparent heirs to her evolving body of work. Expanding on ideas present in Sherman’s work through an innovative program of international films, artists’ tapes and music videos, the film series will feature Sherman’s Office Killer, Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life (after which the Cindy Sherman exhibition was named), Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Hausu and more. Tickets to the Doll Parts films also include same-night access to the full museum and the special exhibition.

Tickets for Nonobject(ive): Summer Happenings at The Broad and the Doll Parts film series will go on sale on the 15th of each month for the following month.

AUCTIONS AMERICA’S SANTA MONICA COLLECTOR CAR EVENT RETURNS JUNE 25-26 2016

    1995 Ferrari F50
In the lead up to this year’s event, June 25th and 26th in Santa Monica, (Barker Hanger) Auctions America displayed the 1995 Ferrari F50 and the 1969 Ferrari 365 GTC, at the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance, this Sunday June 19th.

  •  Highlights:  1988 Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’ headlines docket of ultra-cool poster cars, including the Fiat 500L used by His Holiness Pope Francis during his 2015 New York tour, and the 1987 Ferrari Testarossa from ‘Straight Outta Compton’

Auctions America will take ‘California cool’ to a whole new level, offering a vast selection of poster cars and late-model collectibles at its annual Santa Monica sale, June 25-26. In just three years, the Auctions America event—held at the historic Barker Hangar has emerged as a staple on the SoCal collector car scene, offering vehicles perfectly matched to diverse Southern California tastes.

The latest star attraction for the June sale is a highly original 1988 Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’. Porsche’s first true “supercar”—a 200-mph road car of which only 329 were produced—the 959 was an instant success: rare, well-built, and extremely fast, all ingredients making it a highly sought-after collectible. Originally purchased in Germany by professional Porsche driver, Max Moritz, the featured 959 was imported to the U.S. by its second owner in 2001 and made legal to California guidelines. A well-preserved, well-documented ‘Komfort’ example, it comes to auction just two owners and 7,500 kms from new, accompanied by original tool kit, jack, spares and books (Est. $1,300,000 - $1,600,000). A short video of the 959 in motion is available for viewing here: http://bit.ly/1TLxMFZ
The 959 joins the previously announced Ferrari F50 at the Santa Monica saleanother coveted supercar with blistering performance and sleek design (Est. $1,800,000 - $2,100,000).

“This year’s Santa Monica sale has a particularly strong emphasis on high performance, late-model sports cars in direct response to client demand,” said Matt Malamut, Car Specialist, Auctions America. “In addition to the F50, we’re thrilled to have been entrusted with the sale of the Porsche 959. The experience of driving a 959 is unlike any other; it combines incredible sophistication that allows for both simple and effortless operation, with outstanding performance, great looks and comfort. The beautifully engineered AWD system sees the car track through canyon corners with ease and come out with the turbochargers soaring through the straightaways".
With a roster of some 300 cars slated for podium, Auctions America’s Santa Monica sale has no shortage of quality, blue-chip poster cars and late model collectibles.
Saturday’s sale session (June 25) will see an example of the most iconic Ferrari of the 1980s, a 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, up for bids. One of no less than 20 Ferraris included in the sale lineup, this particular example, finished in white over tan, was used in the feature film Straight Outta Compton with Dr. Dre (played by Corey Hawkins) behind the wheel (Est. $130,000 - $150,000).
2006 Mercedes SLR McLaren
The catalog also includes a low-mileage 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary, finished in classic Rosso with contrasting tan leather interior (Est. $325,000 - $375,000); a 2000 BMW Z8, a stunning example of the model used in the 1999 James Bond film, The World is Not Enough (Est. $200,000 - $250,000); and a black-on-black 2006 Mercedes SLR McLaren, a true performance powerhouse, capable of sprinting 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds (Est. $240,000 - $275,000).

Catering to eclectic SoCal tastes, other standout lots for the Santa Monica sale will include:
·        a generously equipped 1969 Ferrari 365 GTC, expertly prepared for road use, touring and concours exhibitions (Est. $800,000 - $950,000);
·        an award-winning 1969 Corvette L88 427/430 Convertible, the recipient of a comprehensive frame-off restoration by L88 experts, resplendent in Burgundy with Black interior and tan soft-top (Est. $650,000 - $750,000);
·        an aero-inspired 1940 Packard Royal Streamliner Roadster; measuring over 31 feet in length, and equipped with a supercharged V-12 engine from a World War II Patrol Torpedo boat ($450,000 - $600,000);
·        a classic, yet contemporary 1952 Buick Custom – “Resilience”, finished in Blazing Copper (Est. $35,000 - $45,000); and,
·        a 2015 Fiat 500L used by His Holiness Pope Francis during his trip to New York City in September 2015; all hammer proceeds from the Fiat’s sale will go to the Archdiocese of New York, who will in turn donate the funds to support various Catholic charities (Est. $75,000 - $100,000, offered without reserve).

Activists Demonstrate in China to Shut Down Yulin dog Meat Festival

Human Society of United States' (HSI.org) team in Yulin (China) reported that the atmosphere in the Yulin city is tense, but so far evidence suggests reduced killing and less visible dog meat eating than in previous years. And today, the Yulin authorities set up road checkpoints to stop incoming trucks filled with dogs and cats, a key proposal that HSI and its partners in China have lobbied for. As many animals will have already been brought to Yulin, however, HSI urges the government to take more decisive steps such as shutting down the slaughterhouses.
A dog meat dish during Yulin Dog Meat Festival
Peter Li, China policy specialist for HSI, said from Yulin: "Yulin feels like a place that's holding its breath right now. Business was slow at the Dongkou animal market, and a dreadful slaughterhouse exposed by Humane Society International a couple of months ago was shut down when we returned yesterday. Another slaughterhouse we visited was open but we saw  no live animals. The word 'dog' has been painted out or covered with tape on several of the restaurants and slaughterhouses we saw, and a Yulin official told us that, contrary to what has been reported in some media, dog meat sales have in fact been declining continuously.
"We're still seeing market stalls and mopeds piled with the typical brown blowtorched bodies of dogs, but as yet nothing like the scale we feared. It's a muted Yulin for sure. The authorities seem nervous and are warning dog and cat traders not to engage with us and alerting government employees to stay away from the dog meat restaurants."
Dogs and cats arrive in cages to Yulin Dog meat festival
Under China’s "one certificate per dog" rules, all trucks shipping live dogs and cats across provincial boundaries are supposed to have an individual health certificate for each animal. Advocates with China Animal Protection Power, a coalition sponsored by HSI that since 2014 has rescued tens of thousands of dogs from these trucks, report that most truckers fail to conform to this national policy and have either no certificates or have produced fraudulent documents. They find the majority of dogs and cats are stolen pets or strays.

HSI undertook its own Yulin rescue mission this year, and saved 29 dogs (8 puppies) and five cats from a slaughter facility in the area. After the rescue, activists then transported the animals to a shelter where they were fed and evaluated and seen by vets before being prepared for adoption. While it is expected homes in China will be found for many of the animals, but some may be flown to the UK and the US for adoption.

Latest video on dog rescue, June 23 2016: Marc Ching, an American activist and owner of an organic pet food company, travelled to Yulin to recuse dogs kept in nearby compounds before the event. Watch This Guy Rescued 1,000 Dogs From China's Dog Meat Festival Video https://youtu.be/L6kF0N03coo

Meanwhile, Chinese advocates from Humane Society International (HSI) were able to rescue animals in captivity that were going to be slaughtered for the feast ahead of the festival in Yulin. "Some of them wore collars", said Peter Li, China policy specialist at Humane Society International
" Over the past few years, as calls to end Yulin's dog meat event have gained momentum, local governments have responded by disassociating themselves from dog-eating festivals. "An unprecedented 8 million Chinese voted online in support of lawmaker Zheng Xiaohe's legislative proposal during the National People's Congress in March to ban the illegal dog and cat meat trade", Xinhua report said.
Horror scene of cruelty at Yulin, dog beaten to death roped at a tree
Celebrities as Vanderpump, Lewis and Warren (www.stopyulinforever.org/the-team)  inspire more animal lovers to take action and help find a way to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival for good.
The local government has pledged to shut down the dog meat festival and animal rights group have urged the Yulin government to do more to stop dog killings.
Domestic opposition continues to rise too, with The Independent reporting that a June petition addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping was signed by more than 11 million people.
Market crowd during China's Yulin dog meat festival
The first day of Yulin festival (June 21st) on Jiangbin Road, "dog street" for the cluster of dog meat restaurants there, a line formed as people waited for  restaurants to start hanging their dog meat and prepare for dinner at 6 p.m.
Dogs are not just pet-animals but also a popular delicacy for some people in China. Thousands of dogs are being held across Yulin and will be killed for the festival, HSI claims. "Like so many others, he (the dog) had probably been a household pet and was stolen from his family for this meat trade". In recent years, other dog meat festivals have been banned by Chinese authorities after protesters drew attention to them. More than 55 percent of respondents from Guangxi think the Yulin festival does not damage how China is perceived internationally, while more than 67 percent from outside Guangxi think the opposite. However, China's Food and Drug Administration has no legal certification system in place for dog or cat meat, meaning their sale violates food safety laws.

Facts 2016: A new poll conducted by Chinese polling company Horizon, and commissioned by Chinese group China Animal Welfare Association in collaboration with HSI and Avaaz, found that most Chinese citizens want the Yulin festival to end, saying it blackens China’s image.
    • 64 percent support the end of the Yulin festival
    • 51.7 percent say the dog meat trade should be completely banned
    • 62 percent think Yulin damages China’s reputation
    • 69.5 percent have never eaten dog meat.
  • It’s not a traditional festival, it was only invented in 2010 by dog traders to boost profits.
  • Before the festival started, Yulin had no history of mass dog slaughter and consumption.
  • An estimated 30 million dogs a year are killed across Asia for their meat, some 10-20 million in China alone, and thousands die just for Yulin.
  • The World Health Organisation warns that the dog trade spreads rabies and increases the risk of cholera 20-fold.
  • Humane Society International, Beijing Mothers Against Cruelty and VShine submitted a petition in Beijing signed by more than 11 million people around the world.
Mercy For Animals, ASPCA.org and PETA.org are other organizations which support to shut down Yulin Dog/Cat Meat Festival forever. They marched for this cause at the LAPride Parade in West Hollywood June 11 2016.

Press Itinerary The Beatles arrive at JFK Airport Feb.7 1964
With cameras flashing and reporters jostling, they were whisked into Manhattan amid the screams, shouts and tears of New York area teens, braving the cold for a mere glimpse of the band.  Then, that Sunday, the veritable king of the television variety show, Ed Sullivan, introduced them to a captivated American audience of more than 73 million viewers—at the time a television record.  And just like that Beatlemania was upon us.

Stinkboss.com is the new shoe appliance, which both disinfects and dry cleanse your shoes with help of the ozone technology:

Dries the shoes: Inside the appliance, there are two vents on pillars and two floor vents, which circulate mild heat (70o F) and ozone. The mild heat wicks away any moisture in the gear. Stinkboss can also be used with any sweaty, stinky gear that fits loosely over the air vents can be used , like knee pads, boxing gloves, bike helmet, shin guards, batting gloves, hiking boots, etc.
StinkBoss team with pro-surfer Keala Connelly (right)
Disinfects: The ozone technology works as a disinfectant. Ozone is a naturally occurring gas consisting of 3 oxygen molecules (O3). It is the most powerful disinfectant found in nature, killing the bacteria, viruses and germs it comes into contact with.

Deodorizes: Sweat alone doesn’t stink. It’s the duo of sweat and bacteria that cause odor. Our unique technology combining ozone and heat, eliminates odor, rather than just masking it. It takes 90 min.
Stinkbox, a new idea to
disinfect shoes
How stinky is your stuff? The settings start at 30 minutes without heat and 1 hours with heat. You can increase the time in 1hour increments up to 6 hours. "We recommend starting out low and working up to 6 hours if needed. Of course, if you’ve got a super stench going on, by all means start off on the max level! It could even take a couple of max cycles to kill all the funk".
How often should I use StinkBOSS to keep shoes from smelling? In general, a full six hour cycle the first time a pair of shoes is deodorized and then shorter cycles as 30-90 min. thereafter as needed. Once or twice per week should be sufficient after that to keep shoes and gear fresh. The StinkBOSS can accomodate any shoe up to size 14. The StinkBOSS generates a low level of heat (around the mid-70° range), which is just enough to dry up the sweat from your shoes and gear, but not enough to shrink or damage your shoes.

Guillermo del Toro: "At Home with Monsters" opens Aug.1st thru November 27, 2016 at LACMA, Art of the Americas Building, Plaza Level, 5905 Wilshire, Los Angeles

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is pleased to present Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters (August 1–November 27, 2016), the filmmaker’s first museum retrospective.
Guillermo del Toro with his sculpture Sammael from the movie Hellboy
Guillermo del Toro is born October 9, 1964 in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, and is one of the most inventive filmmakers of his generation

Beginning with Cronos (1993) and continuing through The Devil’s Backbone (2001), Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013), and Crimson Peak (2015). Among many other films, television, and book projects, del Toro has reinvented the genres of horror, fantasy, and science fiction.
Today, del Toro’s home base is a cherished residence in suburban Los Angeles that he calls Bleak House. Carefully curated and maintained by the filmmaker, the house contains several thematic “libraries” of objects he has accumulated over many years: paintings, drawings, maquettes, artifacts, and concept film art.
Del Toro collected books from a young age, everything from literary classics to medical encyclopedias to horror comics, and began making short films at eight years old.
He has always collected voraciously, arranging his prized possessions in environments that nourish and motivate him. Bleak House embodies these lifelong fascinations; it is, as del Toro puts it, “the world as I understand it; as it exists in my soul.

The exhibition explores del Toro’s creative process by bringing together elements from his films, objects from his vast personal collections, drawings from his notebooks, and approximately 60 objects from LACMA’s permanent collection. The diverse range of mediaincluding sculpture, paintings, prints, photography, costumes, ancient artifacts, books, maquettes, and filmtotals approximately 500 objects and reflects the broad scope of del Toro’s inspirations. Del Toro said:
“To find beauty in the profane. To elevate the banal. To be moved by genre. These things are vital for my storytelling,”  “This exhibition presents a small fraction of the things that have moved me, inspired me, and consoled me as I transit through life. It’s a devotional sampling of the enormous love that is required to create, maintain, and love monsters in our lives.”

“By bringing del Toro’s notebooks, collections, and film art into museum galleries, we acknowledge the curatorial aspects of his approach to filmmaking,” said Britt Salvesen, curator and department head of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department and the Prints and Drawings department at LACMA. “On one level, he carefully constructs and stages his films in the manner of an exhibition. On another level, he fills their plots with commentaries about the social, psychological, and spiritual power of objects. In this retrospective, as in his extraordinary filmography, del Toro demonstrates the energizing effects of cross-pollination.”
Notebook 2, Guillermo del Toro
Michael Govan, LACMA’s CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, said, “This retrospective is a wonderful example of Art+Film at LACMA. Del Toro encourages us to ignore our traditional art-historical narratives and hierarchies of high and low culture, just as he blends and reinvents conventional genres in his films. With his ability to collapse time and space, history and fiction, nature and fantasy, he taps the latent potential at the core of our institutional mission.”
Following its exhibit at LACMA, Guillermo del Toro will travel to its co-organizing institutions: the Minneapolis Institute of Art (February 26–May 21, 2017) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (September 30, 2017–January 7, 2018).
Guillermo del Toro with his favorite monster Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro is organized into 8 thematic sections:
The exhibition begins with Childhood and Innocence, exploring the central role children play in many of del Toro’s films. Often, these children can perceive alternate realities and give expression to unfiltered emotions in ways that adults cannot. Del Toro does not insulate his young protagonists from fear, abandonment, harm, or even death. At some level, del Toro’s films endlessly revisit his own childhood, which he felt was marred by a strict Catholic upbringing and bullying classmates but redeemed by books, movies, and horror comics. He began drawing at a very young age. To this day, del Toro maintains his early habit of keeping a notebook at hand to record ideas, phrases, lists, and images. Resources for his films, these journals are also essential to his evolution as an artist.
Victoriana, the next gallery, references the Romantic, Victorian, and Edwardian ages, as well as latter-day interpretations of the Victorian era. Charles Dickens, the quintessential Victorian writer, inspired the name of del Toro’s personal residence, Bleak House, a curated space from which many objects in the exhibition are borrowed. Dickens’s blend of realism and fantasy, fascination with the city, sense of humor, and predilection for taxonomy, multifarious character types, and intricate plot twists resonate in del Toro’s films.
This gallery also demonstrates del Toro’s interest in the Victorian relationship to science, in which humans attempted to exert dominion over nature through meticulous categorization. As suggested by his extensive collection of insect specimens, images, and trinkets, del Toro has inherited a fascination with such creatures, although the insects in his films tend to break free of human control in spectacular ways.
Guillermo del Toro with monsters at LACMA
Visitors will subsequently experience a version of Del Toro’s Rain Room(not that Rain Room), a favorite spot in Bleak House in which del Toro has installed a false window and special effects to simulate a perpetual thunderstorm.

The next section explores del Toro’s interest in Magic, Alchemy, and the Occult, where his films are full of puzzles, talismanic devices, secret keys, and quests for forbidden knowledge. Many of del Toro’s characters are scientists, contemporary successors to the monks and alchemists who explored the boundaries between the holy and unholy. He cites the influence of H.P. Lovecraft, the idiosyncratic American writer whose work is considered foundational for the genres of horror and science fiction. Lovecraft’s vivid evocations of madness, transformation, and monstrosity continue to be a major source of inspiration; for the last decade, del Toro has been attempting to adapt Lovecraft’s novella At the Mountains of Madness (1936) for the screen.
Movies, Comics, Pop Culture search deeply into del Toro’s obsession with cinema, from B movies and horror films to directors Alfred Hitchcock and Luis Buñuel. Del Toro’s voracious appetite for film is matched by his enthusiasm for comic books and his admiration for a wide range of illustrators such as Moebius (Jean Giraud), Frank Frazetta, and Richard Corben. He has directed several comic-book adaptions, working closely with Mike Mignola on two films based on his Hellboy series. Always, del Toro refuses to abide by the traditional hierarchies between high and low culture.
Frankenstein and Horrorreveals del Toro’s lifelong love affair with the tale of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. He first absorbed the story as a child, via James Whale’s 1931 film, impressive in its Expressionist-inspired visual beauty. As a teenager, he read Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), which emphasizes the monster’s essential fragility and vulnerability. The story became a touchstone for the young del Toro, who identified powerfully with the creature’s outsider status. The filmmaker now finds in Frankenstein an analogy to his directorial approach. Like the monster, his films are amalgams of used, discarded, and diverse source materials, given new life and purpose.
Del Toro’s fascination with monsters of all types is showcased in Freaks and Monsters
He sees some monsters as tragic: beautiful and heroic in their vulnerability and individuality, they mirror the hypocrisies of society and bring to light corrosive standards of perfection. Though he identifies with the tragic type of monster, del Toro is also adept at creating truly terrifying ones. He begins by thinking of a monster as a character, not simply an assembly of parts. It must be visually convincing from all angles, both in motion and at rest. In his notebooks, he constantly records ideas for distinguishing physical features that may come to fruition only years later. In addition to drawing the initial concepts, he is closely involved in fabricationhe entered the movie industry in Mexico as a special-effects artistand has often expressed his preference for practical effects as opposed to computer-generated imagery.
The final section is Death and the Afterlife. Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the late 1960s and 1970s, del Toro had a number of disturbing confrontations with death, seeing corpses in the street, in a morgue, and in the catacombs beneath the church. His strict Catholic grandmother instilled in him the notion of original sin and even submitted him to exorcisms in a futile attempt to eradicate his love of monsters and fantasy. The pursuit of immortality—promised in Catholic doctrine as the reward for following the church’s teachings—is often seen in his work as a misguided, arrogant desire, destined to bring about the downfall of those caught up in it. Del Toro’s films often include characters acting entirely out of self-interest alongside others who are forced to make sacrifices. His flawed or damaged characters frequently find purpose in community: they take responsibility for their own survival and that of the individuals and environments around them.

Guillermo del Toro is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by Insight Editions. The 144-page volume is edited by Britt Salvesen, Jim Shedden, and Matthew Welch with contributions by Guillermo del Toro, Keith McDonald, Roger Clark, and Paul Koudounaris. The hardcover catalogue is $29.95 and is available at the LACMA Storeand Art Catalogues. www.lacma.org
