CiderFest LA Makes Its Debut in Hollywood

By Karen Ostlund
CiderFest LA will make its debut in Hollywood's Raleigh Studios this Saturday, the 19th of September in two sessions, one afternoon and one evening session.
The unique layout of this festival has been crafted into three areas, each staffed with a team of Craft Concierges:
Section one consists of the TASTING PAVILIONS and is organized by style, with a total of ten Tasting Pavilions there is quite a variety. The Raw Cider section are simply nude while others like the Full Bodied Beer & Cider Section, which are are more complex.
The second section is MEET THE MAKERS CIDER & BEER ROW which is the core of the educational push and will play host to the proudest brew masters to show off their product.
The third section is the CIDER & BEER GALLERIES which consist of the most purveyors of fine culinary flavor. All cider and beer selection will be represented in this section.
Troy Cider from California
Cider is popular with health seekers and the gluten-free crowd. “L.A. is the largest market for cider in the U.S., based on sales volume,” said festival producer Mark McTavish. “Shocking to many, but it’s true.”
"These are not the ciders you see on TV commercials, nor will you see their ads on the wall in the restroom at a Las Vegas night club. No, these are real ciders made with 100% fresh pressed juice. No water added. No artificial ingredients. Just the raw goods. These are orchard sourced ciders that sell out every year, relying on next year’s harvest to bring another bounty of juice. We have assembled a collection of rare products, never seen before in Southern California"“The L.A. Cider Fest is 100 percent curated with quality in mind," continued event producer McTavish “The majority of our selections will be new to consumers in L.A., as they are rare and limited in production.”

Many drinkers don't have access to the small-batch ciders that will be available at the L.A. Cider Fest. This makes the fest an opportunity to change minds and challenge palates, broadening the cider spectrum from saccharine bombs to balanced and nuanced beverages. The fest will feature tasting pavilions, organized by style, so that you can isolate what you do or don’t like about a cider and get an idea of what to pair with it.
You can expect a wide range of cider flavors and even textures. The imports are especially worth sampling. Canadian Sea Cider Prohibition is aged six months in Screech barrels, lending it a strong rum character and high alcohol content. French import Bordelet Poire Granit is a perry (cider made from pears), far more delicate than the barrel-aged selections. Full list of Cider Houses participating:
http://www.labeerandciderfest.com/selections/

Black Dog Cider by 101 Cider House
101 Cider House will also have its latest release, Black Dog cider. The world’s first “black cider,” Black Dog is made with Newtown Pippin apples, Ventura County lemons and activated charcoal from coconuts. This release comes on the heals of the activated charcoal craze you've witnessed at your nearest juice bar. 101 Cider House also will offer its full lineup of bone-dry ciders.

L.A. Cider Fest, Sat., Sept. 19, 1-4.30pm and 6-9.30 p.m.; Raleigh Studios, 5300 Melrose Ave.

THE BROAD, THE NEW CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM IN

LOS ANGELES, WILL OPEN TO THE PUBLIC SEPTEMBER 20th

Opening speech by Founding Director of he Broad Joanne Heyler at yesterday's
press preview
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES The Broad, the new contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles, will open to the public on Sunday, September 20, 2015.

Built by philanthropists and longtime art collectors Eli and Edythe Broad, The Broad will welcome visitors from near and far with free general admission to an inaugural
installation drawn from two collections of more than 2,000 works of contemporary art.

Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), The Broad makes its home in the city’s burgeoning Grand Avenue arts corridor, across the street from architectural icons including Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Left, Joanne Heyler, Eli and Edythe Broad w LA Mayor Eric Garcetti
and Elizabeth Diller, Principal-in-Charge Diller Scofidio+Renfro
"Edythe and I are delighted to announce an opening date, and we are already looking forward to welcoming the public to our museum," said Eli Broad. "It is our privilege to give this museum, the works in our art collections and a size-able endowment and free admission as a gift to the people of Los Angeles."

"When we open our doors on September 20, we will be greatly advancing Eli and Edye’s vision of sharing contemporary art with the broadest possible audience," said Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad. "The combination of innovative architecture and provocative art will make visiting The Broad an experience to remember."

Roy Lichtenstein 1965-66
The new museum’s opening installation will be a predominantly chronological selection of masterworks from the Broads’ extraordinary personal art collection as well as that of The Broad Art Foundation. The installation will begin with works by major artists who came to prominence in the 1950s, including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly.

The Pop art of the 1960s—an area of great depth in the collections—will be represented through works by Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha and Andy Warhol, among others. Moving into the 1980s—the decade when The Broad Art Foundation was established—the installation will present a rich concentration of works by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger and Jeff Koons.
Jeff Koons Tulips 1995-2004
The installation will continue up through the present, with works including a monumental, immersive, nine-screen video piece, The Visitors, by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, which was only recently acquired for the collections, among many other new acquisitions.

Artist BJ Nilsen’s sound installation DTLA, draws on the aural environment of Los Angeles. Just as The Broad’s porous architectural "veil" subtly interweaves natural light and glimpses of the urban streets-cape of Grand Avenue into its galleries, Nilsen will bring the soundscape of downtown Los Angeles into The Broad. Stillness, the second installation featured as part of Sky-lit, will be activated after dark, and is a sound and light work by Los Angeles multidisciplinary artist Yann Novak. Stillness creates an immersive environment for reflection, inviting visitors to contemplate the effect of climate and light on their physical and emotional states.
Andy Warhol 1964 Twenty Jackies
The Broads have been at the center of the civic and cultural development of downtown Los Angeles since they moved to the city in 1964. The couple has spent five decades assembling two of the world’s most admired collections of postwar and contemporary art, with the aim of creating a widely accessible public collection. In addition to their personal collection, they created The Broad Art Foundation in 1984
as a lending library of contemporary art for museums around the world. The foundation, which will be headquartered in the new museum, has made more than 8,000 loans to over 500 museums.

Works from both The Broad Art Foundation collection and the Eli and Edythe L. Broad Collection will be shown at The Broad.

Barbara Kruger 1989

The Broad collections include the largest grouping of Cindy Sherman works in the world, one of the largest of Jeff Koons, the largest collection of Roy Lichtenstein’s works outside of the Lichtenstein Foundation, the only near-complete grouping of the 570-plus multiples of Joseph Beuys in the Western U.S. and one of the most significant groupings of Christopher Wool paintings.

Among the other artists represented in depth in the continually growing collections are Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chuck Close, Eric Fischl, Leon Golub, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Jasper Johns, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Glenn Ligon, Sharon Lockhart, Lari Pittman, Charles Ray, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, Philip Taaffe, Robert Therrien, Cy Twombly, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol and Terry Winters.

Takashi Murakami 1999
DS+R’s remarkable design for The Broad features public gallery spaces on the first and third floors, with a central "vault" housing collection storage and staff offices seeming to hover between. Upon entering the lobby, visitors will travel up a 105-foot escalator through the concrete vault and emerge into the third-floor gallery, which features 23-foot ceilings and 318 skylights that filter diffused sunlight.
Upon exiting the third floor, most visitors will again descend through the vault via a central stairwell, which offers glimpses of the artwork in the archive that may be displayed in future exhibitions.

Wrapped around the Grand Avenue elevation of the building, like a "veil," is a porous exoskeleton made of concrete panels and steel. The veil filters natural daylight into the building’s interior and establishes lines of sight between the museum and the street. The veil lifts at the south and north corners of the building to define two street-level entrances.

Under the Table Installation by Robert Therrien 1994
Gensler served as executive architect for the museum building project.

Integral to the project is an adjacent 24,000-square-foot outdoor public plaza, also designed by DS+R, which stretches from Hope Street to Grand Avenue.

Featuring a grove of 100-year-old Barouni olive trees and a large lawn, as well as enhanced landscaping and improvements along Grand Avenue, the plaza adds a much-needed parcel of green space to the downtown cultural corridor and makes the area more pedestrian-friendly.
On its western end, the plaza will feature an adjacent restaurant called "Otium" that is being developed by The Broad in partnership with Bill Chait and his company Sprout.
The location is the block between Hope Street and Grand Avenue south of the museum, about a block and a half south of Disney Hall.
The new restaurant, “Otium” — a Latin word that translates as "leisure time" is scheduled to open in October 2015 with a partnership between Tim Hollingsworth, Broad and Bill Chait’s Sprout Restaurant Group. The menu will be combined of Asian, Mexican, Mediterranean and French cooking.

The West Hollywood hot spot, Bagatelle night club and restaurant on La Cienega, has recently gotten a whole new look, thanks to the recognizable artwork of world renown pop artist Nelson De La Nuez, known as The King of Pop Art. The opening reception for his art was held the day before the Emmys, September 19, but stays in the restaurant permanently.

restaurant in West Hollywood.

Bagatelle mixes elegant chandeliers, white tablecloths and French cuisine with the vibrant pop art of the famous artist.
The restaurant is legendary for its St Tropez style, lively champagne brunches that say to the world, "Live your life fully in the moment; Dance on tables, drink fine champagne out of the bottle, love your life."
De La Nuez conveys messages through his artwork about living the good life and enjoying what you work hard for in his art piece "Darling, all I require are fabulous shoes!"- which is why his glamorous pop art and sophisticated Monopoly/Wall Street pieces fit right in.

The King of Pop Art, takes Bagatelle to a truly unique, sophisticated yet fun, pop art world! He's brilliant," said Laurent Zilber, partner at Bagatelle restaurant. "He's painting as fast as he can to fill orders for galleries and clients but it's getting harder to keep up." There's only one King of Pop Art and it's all created by him.
"Nelson's colorful humor and talent fits like a glove with our elegant Bagatelle upbeat, party ambiance. We pop the bottles (champagne), Nelson pops the art!" exclaimed Zilber.

Nelson De La Nuez's artwork is hanging in some of the most prominent, private and corporate owned collections in the world. His celebrity collectors range from the recent Sarah Jessica Parker to the infamous Michael Jackson to Paris Hilton and Seth MacFarlane and many more. By Karen Ostlund

(stroll down for new photos from the event) Hollywood Forever Cemetery presents the 16th annual Dia de los Muertos festival this Saturday October 24th - one week before its date November 1st in our calendar.

This years theme is Shamanic Visions of the Huichol.

This Saturday, October 24th, 2015: 12pm until 12am

Featuring on the Main Stage: LILA DOWNS, HUICHOL MUSICAL, LA MISA NEGRA, EL MARIACHI MANCHESTER and EDNA VAZQUEZ

Huichol Musical is a quintet from the Sierra Madre Occidental region of Jalisco, Mexico. The band takes its name from the Huichol, an indigenous Mexican ethnic group whom the Aztecs called “the Ancient Ones.” Huichol Musical made their major-label recording debut in 2008 with Desde México… “Cumbia Cusinela”. Given its novel mix of indigenous cultural cues with contemporary regional Mexican musical styles, Desde México… “Cumbia Cusinela” became a sensation, spawning the hit singles “Cumbia Cusinela” and “La Cusinela,” the former of which features lyrics sung in the Huichol language. The album spent 42 weeks on Billboard’s Top Latin Album Chart, earning a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Mexican Regional Album and a Lo Nuestro nomination for Grupero Artist of the Year in 2008. After international success and a sabbatical break, Huichol Musical returns in 2015 with their fifth studio album titled “Cielito Lindo”. The single by the same name is a song considered the jewel of Mexican traditional music; the group tattooed their own style fusing native sounds with contemporary regional music.

Lila Downs
Lila Downs

Lila Downs has one of the world’s most singular voices and innovative approaches to music. Born in the state of Oaxaca México, she is the daughter of a Mixtec Indian woman, Anastasia Sanchez, who ran away from her village at 15 to sing in Mexico City cantinas and a University of Minnesota professor Allen Downs, who saw her singing and fell in love. Lila grew up both in Minnesota and Oaxaca, and studied classical voice and cultural anthropology at the University of Minnesota. Her music and vocal artistry have many influences and is as varied as the ancient cultures that serve as her inspiration. For two decades Lila Downs has traveled throughout the world reinterpreting the roots of music, such as blues, jazz, soul, cumbia, rock, even rap and klezmer music. She weaves various musical forms with traditional Mexican and native Mesoamerican music, singing in Spanish, English and the languages of the Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl cultures. Lila has recorded 9 studio albums, garnering a Grammy and three Latin Grammys.

The Amanda Foundation's Annual Halloween-themed fundraiser was presented by Bow Wow Beverly Hill last Sunday October 25th at 2 Rodeo Drive .

Tina Sinatra (daughter of Frank Sinatra and Nancy Barbato) got this year's Amanda Foundation's "Worthy of Love" Awardin recognition of her long time support of The Amanda Foundation's mission to rescue homeless dogs and cats. She is an actress and producer, known for The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Perlico - Perlaco (1971) and Dream Girl of '67 (1966).
Tina confessed she was once allergic to dogs but overcame it with help from the Amanda Foundation, and she has been a dog-owner ever since.

2015's theme was "Vintage Las Vegas" in honor of animal advocate, Tina Sinatra, who recently donated a generous one million dollars that was desperately needed to improve and expand the foundation's services. Previous award recipients include Kaley Cuoco, Pauley Perrette, and Cesar Milan.
The night's highlights included Casino Night (roulette, craps and blackjack), delicious vegetarian cuisine by Crossroads Restaurant, and a special Halloween cocktail, the "Tina-tini".
Silent auction items included a Chopard gold collar designed for “The Artist” dog Uggie for the 2012 Academy Awards, paintings donated by Tina Sinatra, Tiffany & Co donated necklace, an African Safari, and gift certificates to the hottest L.A. restaurants including Connie & Teds and Craig's. The evening concluded with the annual doggy costume contest.

The Amanda Foundation established 1976 has rescued and placed thousands of dogs and cats into loving homes and is the ONLY non-profit animal charity in the city of Beverly Hills and the only one in Los Angeles to own and operate a full-service veterinary practice.

The Amanda Foundation also runs California's most successful free mobile spay and neuter program, and next free event to spray and neuter will be November 1st in east Los Angeles.

Tina Sinatra's generous donation helped The Amanda Foundation purchase the land their 90 year-old building rests on - almost 40 years after their inception.

Once The Amanda Foundation finally owns their property, their new fundraising goals include building a new state-of-the-art animal hospital and kennel for the animals they rescue and the under-served clients they assist on a daily basis.
The building they will call home was constructed in 1924 out of stucco and wood, and has seen better days. The new building and equipment will sustain the foundation and allow them to expand their Spay-mobile program and increase their educational programs and improve the living conditions for the dogs and cats they house, which also will increase adoptions.

Chevrolet Volt Named Winner of Green Car Journal's 2016 Green Car of the Year

Finalists included the Audi A3 e-tron, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata & Toyota Prius.

By Karen Ostlund at LA Auto Show (last day open November 29th, LAAutoShow.com)

Downtown Los Angeles at La Auto Show convention center, winner Chevrolet Volt press conference prior to Green Car Journal Award
The second-generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt, an all-new and significantly improved version of the automaker's groundbreaking extended range electric vehicle that first made its appearance in 2011, has been named Green Car Journal's 2016 Green Car of the Year®. The award was announced during a press conference at the LA Auto Show on November 19. Other finalists for the 2016 Green Car of the Year® award included the Audi A3 e-tron, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata, and Toyota Prius.
Green Car Journal editors point out that the 2016 Volt has improved in virtually every way, with a sleek and sporty design, more energy-dense batteries, new electric motors, and quicker acceleration. It features a more efficient 1.5-liter engine-generator that creates on-board electricity to power the Volt's motors for a total 420 miles. Among its most important achievements is an increase to 53 miles of driving exclusively on batteries.
    (L) Ron Cogan, Editor of Green Car Journal & Steve Majoros for Chevrolet
An increasing number of vehicle models are considered for the Green Car of the Year® program each year, a reflection of the auto industry's expanding efforts in offering new vehicles with higher efficiency and improved environmental impact. Green Car Journal has been honoring the most important "green" vehicles every year at the LA Auto Show, since its inaugural award announced at the show in 2005.
"This is the first time in Green Car of the Year® history that a vehicle has won the award in two succeeding model generations," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. "Considering all the brands and models evaluated in the award program, that's quite a statement. The Chevrolet Volt was a standout when it won 2011 Green Car of the Year® and continues in that role today as the 2016 Green Car of the Year®."
The Green Car of the Year® award is an honor widely recognized as the auto industry's most important environmental accolade. Green Car Journal has been the leading voice in the intersection of automobiles, energy, and the environment since the publication's launch in 1992.
    Finalist Audi A3 e-tron 2016
"Chevrolet is bringing fun-to-drive, technology-loaded, and affordable electric solutions for our customers, and the 2016 Volt delivers on all fronts," said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet marketing manager. "For the Volt to stand out as Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year® reaffirms Chevrolet's commitment to delivering electric solutions to our customers that exceed their expectations."

The Green Car of the Year® is selected through a majority vote by an esteemed jury that includes celebrity auto enthusiast Jay Leno, plus leaders of noted environmental and efficiency organizations including Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society; Matt Petersen, board member of Global Green USA; Dr. Alan Lloyd, President Emeritus of the International Council on Clean Transportation; Mindy Lubber, President of CERES; and Kateri Callahan, President of the Alliance to Save Energy.

    Finalist Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2016
    Finalist Honda Civic 2016

During the award's vetting process, Green Car Journal editors consider all vehicles, fuels, and technologies as an expansive field of potential candidates is narrowed down to a final five. Finalists are selected for their achievements in raising the bar in environmental performance. Many factors are considered including efficiency, EPA and CARB emissions certification, performance characteristics, 'newness,' and affordability. Availability to the mass market is important to ensure honored models have the potential to make a real difference in environmental impact, and finalists must be available for sale by January of the award year.
Last year, the Green Car of the Year winner® was the BMW i3.

    Finalist Toyota Prius 2016
About Green Car of the Year®The GCOY award is an important part of Green Car Journal's mission to showcase environmental progress in the auto industry. Drum Kit
The auction of The Property From The Collection of Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach includes the most important drum kit to ever hit the auction. Among the seven of Starr’s personal drum kits in the auction is the iconic musician’s first 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl three-piece drum kit. The kit was used by Starr in more than 200 performances between May of 1963 and February of 1964 and used to record some of The Beatles biggest hits including: “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “She Loves You,” “All My Loving,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Money,” and “I Wanna Be Your Man,” and many others. Paul McCartney also used the Oyster Black Pearl kit on his first solo album, McCartney. This specific drum kit has not been seen in public for more than 50 years (Est. $300,000 - $500,000).
Ringo Starr’s other spectacular kits offered for sale each carry unprecedented provenance of the Beatles and Ringo Starr’s solo career. They include:
    Tom Toms Kit
    • A custom built Jumbo Silver Sparkle kit that was used in The Beatles “Hello Goodbye” promotional video filmed in November 1967 (Est. $100,000 - $200,000)
    • A kit commissioned for Starr by George Harrison. In 1968, Harrison traveled to Los Angles to produce an album. While there he worked with drummer Hal Blaine who used a unique “Monster Drum Set.” Harrison was inspired to get one for Starr. Harrison, through Blaine, commissioned a set of the custom made Blaemire fiberglass. The set, custom made by Howey Oliver, consists of seven toms. Only five sets of these custom kits are known to exist. Upon receiving the gift Ringo sent a thank you note to Blaine that read “Thanks Hal, for the tom tom tom tom tom toms!” (Est. $10,000 - $20,000)
    • In 2002 Starr performed on a Ludwig four-piece kit in gold sparkle with a hammered bronze snare at the George Harrison memorial concert, Concert for George. Starr played that night with “George’s Band” alongside Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Dhani Harrison and other musicians who had performed with Harrison during his career (Est. $30,000 - $50,000)
    • A unique set of Ludwig clear Vistalite drums with interior lights used by Starr in his 1978 television movie Ringo (Est. $30,000 - $50,000)
    • The 1989 inaugural tour of Ringo Starr and his All-Starr band toured three countries in five months. Starr played a Ludwig silver sparkle while performing with Clarence Clemmons, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Dr. John, Jim Keltner, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston, and Joe Walsh. Starr continues to tour with a rotating line up of All-Starrs (Est. $50,000 - $70,000)
    Guitar
Among the hundreds of items to be offered are some of Starr’s other percussion instruments – tambourines, bongos, a hand drum inscribed to Starr by Harry Nilsson, and homemade noisemakers. A limited number of Starr’s own stage-used custom-made drum sticks will also be offered in the sale. Guitars gifted to Starr by fellow Beatles are also part of the rare and remarkable auction. George Harrison gave Starr a Gretsch guitar (Estimate $100,000 - $200,000) which is being offered. John Lennon owned 1964 325FG Rose-Morris model Rickenbacker with a fire-glo sunburst finish (Estimate $600,000 - $800,000) and gave it to Starr after he played it on stage during The Beatles 1964/65 Christmas shows and later in his home studio. The guitar model became known as the “Beatle-Backer” and Lennon’s likeness was used in advertisements for the guitar.
    Auction Lot
Marc Bolan, friend, fellow musician and subject, along with the rest of T-Rex, of Starr’s documentary/variety film Born to Boogie, gifted a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar to Starr(Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000). The pair was influential to each other’s careers. The glam rock superstar played guitar on Starr’s Ringo album and Starr was inspired to write the song “Back off Boogaloo” from Bolan’s frequent use of the slang word. In 1966, The Beatles Yesterday and Today“Butcher cover” created headlines and controversy. Starr’s personal album sleeve is included in this ground-breaking auction. Ringo labeled the sleeve “Ringo” on the back to identify it as his personal copy (Estimate: $8,000 - $10,000).
“I am not sure I can find the right words to describe how remarkable this auction is,” said Darren Julien, Founder & CEO of Julien’s Auctions.(left) with Nolan Martin (Executive Director) “To be able to say you are representing such music royalty as that of Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach is not only an honor but one of the greatest privileges of my life and professional career.”

This exhibit celebrates Hot Rod Magazine, Petersen’s first publication, along with the cars featured in the magazine over the years, artifacts from Petersen’s life and a selection of wildly customized cars – from iconic customs (the Hirohata Merc and Billy Gibbons’ “CadZZilla”) to lowriders, roadsters and race cars.

One last trip down the grand staircase and visitors will find themselves on the Peter and Merle Mullin Artistry Floor (1), where they can discover the most artfully designed vehicles from history, often regarded as rolling sculpture. Explore how the automobile has been interpreted as the subject of fine art and even used as a canvas for artistic expression. The Mullin Grand Salon features the exhibit Artistry of the Automobile, featuring some of the finest coachbuilt cars of the art deco era, from the 1936 Type 57sc Bugatti Atlantic to the 1938 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Figoni et Falaschi Teardrop, and more. This gallery also houses a 166-foot panoramic display wall displaying motion graphic art inspired by the “golden ratio,” a design standard often used in Art Deco era design.

From the Mullin Grand Salon, visitors can move to the Ken and Dayle Roath Gallery, featuring a curated display of cover art from the 106-year history of Westways Magazine, the print publication of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Never before has such a collection been assembled and displayed in one place.

Finally, the last exhibit on the top-to-bottom tour is also the first one visitors see upon entering the museum – BMW Art Cars in the Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery, presented by BMW of North America. The BMW Art Car program was launched by French auctioneer/racer Hervé Poulain, who commissioned Alexander Calder to design the livery of a 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL. The car was campaigned at the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans by Sam Posey, Jean Guichet and Hervé Poulain and was one of Calder’s last works. Also on display is the 1995 BMW 850 CSi designed by highly influential British artist David Hockney, who now lives a few miles from the Petersen, as well as the 2008 BMW Z4 used by South African artist Robin Rhode for the “Expression Of Joy” project. Rhode utilized the car as an internal-combustion paint brush: He remotely activated paint sprayers directed onto the tires as the Z4 drove over a large canvas. A piece of the Expression of Joy canvas is displayed on the wall in the Hammer Foundation Gallery, as are images and information on all 17 BMW Art Cars.

To see it all, the Petersen Automotive Museum opens to the public on Monday, December 7th.

The museum is open seven days a week, from 10am to 6pm, and admission prices are as follows: adults - $15, seniors and students - $12, children - $7, active duty military and educators – free, Children under 3 – free.
